This tutorial covers:

  • Printing settings for each size
  • How to select specific pages and choose between single or double-sided printing
  • How to cut, staple or punch your pages
  • Tools I personally use and recommend

What You'll Need

  • A home printer (inkjet or laser)
  • Paper: A4, US Letter, or A5
  • Paper trimmer or scissors (for A5 or Happy Planner)
  • Hole punch (6-hole punch or Happy Planner Punch)
  • Optional: Long-arm stapler for booklet-style printing
  • Optional: Laminator if you would like to laminate your cover page

How to Print A4 and US Letter Sizes

These are the most straightforward formats. Simply print directly onto A4 or US Letter paper.

  1. Open your PDF file in Adobe Acrobat Reader (free to download)
  2. Go to File > Print
  3. Set the Paper Size to match your file (A4 or US Letter)
  4. Choose the following settings:
    • Print Actual Size or set scale to 100 percent
    • Portrait orientation (unless stated otherwise)
    • Select "Print on both sides" if you want double-sided
  5. Select specific pages (for example, pages 2 to 6) if you do not want to print the entire bundle.
  6. You can punch holes and place the pages into a binder, or use protective sleeves and slip your printables into the pockets

Use pockets to protect your printables

How to Print A5

I do not include trim marks for A5 printables. If you're printing on A4 paper, follow the steps below to print two pages per sheet and trim down the centre.

  1. Open your A5-sized PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader (free to download)
  2. In the Print menu, select “Multiple” and set it to print 2 pages per sheet
  3. Print single or double-sided as desired
  4. Use a paper trimmer to cut directly down the middle to create two A5 pages (148.5 x 210 mm)

Optional: Print an A5 Booklet

  1. Open your PDF and go to File > Print
  2. Pages to Print: Select your specific pages
  3. Under Page Sizing, select "Booklet"
  4. Choose:
    • Booklet subset: Both sides
    • Binding: Left
  5. Print, fold, and staple with a long-arm stapler

How to Bind A5 Pages

  • Use a 6-hole punch such as the Planner Punch Board
  • Insert into a ring-bound planner

How to Print for Happy Planner Classic Size

The Happy Planner Classic size is 7 x 9.25 inches. You will print on A4 paper and then trim.

  1. Use the Happy Planner version of the printable PDF
  2. If you have Adobe Acrobat Pro (paid version):
    • Use the pdf file without trim marks
    • Go to File > Print Production > Add Printer Marks
    • Select “Trim Marks” before printing
  3. If you are using the free version of Acrobat:
    • Use the pdf version of the file that already includes trim marks
  4. Print using Actual Size with no scaling
  5. Use a paper trimmer to cut each sheet down to 7 x 9.25 inches (177.8 mm x 234.9 mm).
  6. I like to print my covers in colour using an inkjet printer and laminate them for added durability when using The Happy Planner.

Punching and Binding

  • Use The Happy Punch (Classic size)
  • Punch along the edge and insert pages into your disc-bound Happy Planner

Recommended Tools

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (free) or Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Paper trimmer for neat edges
  • Planner Punch Board for 6-hole ring binders (A5 pages)
  • The Happy Planner Punch for Happy Planner Classic pages
  • Long-arm stapler for folded booklets
  • Paper 120 to 160 gsm for higher-quality results
