Meet the Maker: Kat Burrows Designs

Hi there, and welcome! I’m Kat!  The hands, heart, and creator behind Kat Burrows Designs. If you’ve just discovered my little handmade world, I’m so glad you’re here.

It’s been a long while since I’ve done a proper Meet the Maker, and with lots of lovely new faces around, I thought it was the perfect time to reintroduce myself and share the story behind my shop.

A Creative Journey That Started in 2005

My creative journey began when I was invited to a cardmaking class in 2005. I had no idea at the time just how much that one moment would shape the future.

Soon after, I started selling handmade greeting cards at local markets alongside my mum, who made adorable kids’ clothes. My grandma would join in too, crocheting coat hangers to help us cover our stall fees. We truly were a crafty family, and that’s where the original name Mum and Me Handmade Designs came from.

All set up at the markets

In 2023, I rebranded to Kat Burrows Designs to better reflect how my business has evolved. While the name has changed, the love, care, and creativity in every item remain the same.

What I Create

Today, I offer a growing range of cheerful, practical, and handmade goodies, including:

  • Handmade greeting cards
  • Planner stickers
  • Die-cut stickers
  • Keychains
  • Coasters
  • Tote bags
  • Bookmarks & magnetic bookmarks
  • Art prints
  • Digital seamless patterns

Every item you see in my shop has been thoughtfully created in my converted shipping container studio, nestled in a rural part of the Sunshine Coast (just 25 minutes from the beach — lucky, I know!).  Check out my last blog post: Before & After: My Shipping Container Studio Makeover to find out more about my studio.

I illustrate and design nearly everything myself, especially the cards, my small sticker sheets, bookmarks, and art prints. The planner sticker kits use artwork I’ve purchased from other amazing artists. I love supporting fellow creatives!

I make most things in-house, with coasters and tote bags sublimated right here in the studio. Keychains and notepads are the only items I get professionally manufactured, but the designs are all mine.

A Few Fun Things About Me

  • My first planner was a Dinky Diary in the 80s, and I’ve been obsessed with lists and organisation ever since.
  • I start each morning with a flat white from my coffee machine (with oat milk, of course!).
  • Love my Ohuhu Alcohol Markers and those Coco Wyo colouring books?! Totally obsessed!
  • I’ve got more unfinished craft projects than I can count — cross stitch, crochet, knitting… the stack grows every year!
  • My last five books read have been audiobooks but I do miss holding a real book in my hands.

I’ve also recently returned to sewing and reignited my passion for surface pattern design. You’ll now find some of my original patterns available in my Spoonflower Shop. I’ve even started using my own fabric designs to make key fobs and there's a secret project in the works featuring a print from my Tiny Library Collection. Stay tuned!

Why I Do What I Do

I feel so lucky to do this full-time. Creating products that make people smile, keep them organised, or brighten their homes brings me genuine joy. Whether you’ve been following since the Mum and Me Handmade Designs days or you’ve just stumbled across my shop — thank you. Your support truly means the world.

Here’s to many more years of illustrating, creating, crafting, and connecting with this amazing community. From starting back in 2005 to now, I’ll be celebrating 20 creative years this September and honestly, I can’t believe it.

Thank you for being part of the journey!

Kat x
